Characterization and complete genome sequence of a novel coronavirus, coronavirus HKU1, from patients with pneumonia woo2005characterization

Study reporting discovery and characterization of human coronavirus HKU1 (CoV-HKU1) associated with pneumonia in Hong Kong. An index case (71-year-old Chinese man) had serial nasopharyngeal aspirates tested by quantitative RT-PCR targeting the coronavirus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (pol) gene fragment, showing high viral loads early in illness followed by undetectable results later. Screening of 400 SARS-CoV-negative nasopharyngeal aspirates from respiratory illness cases during the 2003 SARS period found one additional CoV-HKU1-positive pneumonia case (35-year-old woman).
